Artist biography:
Andrew (Andy) Cheffings

I have had a very varied career.
I grew up on a working small family farm on the Lincolnshire Marsh in East England. I often played the harmonium at the Methodist Chapel in the village. I became interested in Music Theatre and founded a Youth Opera Group when I was 18. This got me interested in inclusion in the arts.

I studied for a BA in Music at Dartington College of Arts, specialising in North Indian Classical vocal performance and Community Music.

I then found as many different ways of working with Community Music and inclusion as I could. And the main focus of this, over time, became working with disabled people. I was most interested in changing attitudes of audiences, enabling them to appreciate the expressive musical contributions of the most seriously disabled performers. From the performers perspective, I worked to encourage all performers to contribute their own musical ideas to performances through improvisation and composition.

During this time of absorption in Community Music work I also studied textile design and took part in several exhibitions, including a solo showcase exhibition at Nottingham Castle. And I got together a small harp band, showcasing my Community Music approach, so that all members of the band contributed improvisation, and composition or arrangement to the performances, and the audiences were encouraged to take everyone’s contributions seriously.

I had a partial change of direction in recent years following a diagnosis of long term psychophysiological spectrum disorders (which had always been a mysterious ongoing difficulty for me up to then). As a result, I studied hypnotherapy and did other short therapeutic trainings, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy. So that now I offer chronic pain and anxiety therapy as well as Community Arts work.

I have a life-long interest in religion. I currently practice Quakerism, Buddhism and Sufism with 4 different congregations. I was briefly a Buddhist minister and used to run a Buddhist Choir on Natural Voice principles.

About the album:

"Narratives of non-violence, inclusion and healing.
These are the narratives I aspire to in my work with healing, writing and music.
I trained initially at Dartington College of Arts 1986-89 in Community Arts and N. Indian Classical Vocal performance.
My Community Arts work took me into many and varied contexts and I developed a passion for inclusion, particularly inclusion in the production process (composing and improvising) of music.
It always seemed to me that this Community Arts work was part of healing practice and I have since done training in hypnotherapy, mindfulness and Pain Reprocessing Therapy in order to broaden this healing in the body-mind.
It almost goes without saying that inclusion and healing are acts of non-violence."
